Because of my own tastes as a reader, I was not as awed as the rest of the world by his bestseller, The Underground Railroad.I could not completely buy into Whitehead’s magical realism and his fantastical vision of an actual railroad, secretly operating underground, freeing slaves. The Nickel Boys is a historical fiction coming of age story centering around a young black man named Elwood Curtis at the beginning of the civil rights movement. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was then sentenced to time at a “reform school in Florida. The Nickel Boys is doing similar historical recuperative work to Whitehead’s previous novel The Underground Railroad. The latter is justly celebrated as one of 5/5.
