Book Review: The Nickel Boys. I started The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead with low expectations. Because of my own tastes as a reader, I was not as awed as the rest of the world by his bestseller, The Underground Railroad.I could not completely buy into Whitehead’s magical realism and his fantastical vision of an actual railroad, secretly operating underground, freeing slaves.   The Nickel Boys is a historical fiction coming of age story centering around a young black man named Elwood Curtis at the beginning of the civil rights movement. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was then sentenced to time at a “reform school in Florida.   The Nickel Boys is doing similar historical recuperative work to Whitehead’s previous novel The Underground Railroad. The latter is justly celebrated as one of 5/5.   The Nickel Boys is a historical fiction book about a reform school for boys. It's based on a real school that is hard to believe actually existed.

5-star review: "This book was a balm for my soul, a portrait of a black church community circa with sweet characters (well, most of them), interconnections that stretch back decades, and a plot with more than one mystery at its heart.

The poverty and racism are there, but so too are McBride’s huge heart, laugh-out-loud humor, and amazing. Whitehead unflinchingly portrays the horrors of Jim Crow-era Florida, an uncomfortable period of American history that many would rather forget. Whitehead shows us that unearthing the truth of injustices buried in the past is a powerful and necessary act.
